Have questions about the Atkins tower closure?

Tower Closure Q&A

Check out our Q&A

Why are the tower floors closed?

Atkins Library's tower is closed for significant renovations to make our Ground through 10th floor elevators ADA accessible which currently they are not. This will allow for improved access and safety for all of our library users. The renovations include replacing the tower elevators, upgrading the fire alarm and smoke control systems, updating restrooms and transforming the study spaces on floors five through 10. The elevators that serve floors G through 10 are out of service, and floors five through 10 are closed, including the stairwells to those floors.

Can’t the tower floors be closed a few at a time instead of all at once?

All floors have to be closed at the same time because the elevator replacement work involves every floor simultaneously throughout the duration of the renovation.

The quiet study floors were in the tower. Where is quiet study now?

Currently, the west side of the 3rd floor (overlooking the SAC) is designated for quiet study. There are also silent study areas on the ground floor in the compact shelving room and on the first floor in the Graduate and Silent Study Room.

Where else can we study?

The Cone University Center offers study space closest to Atkins, and the “After Hours” lounge is typically a quieter space in the evenings. Cone is generally open M-F 7 a.m.-11 p.m. and Sat & Sun 12 p.m.-11 p.m.

Study seating is also available at the Hight Architecture Library in Storrs and the Popp Martin Student Union.

The all-gender bathrooms were on tower floors. Are there any others in the building?

Yes, there is an all-gender bathroom on the ground floor near the North Entrance.

Why isn’t the library open 24/5 now?

Much of the renovation, particularly loud construction, will be done overnight so our library hours are revised to reflect this. Atkins will be open 24 hours daily before and during final exams from December 2—12, and disruptive construction will be on hold.

How long will construction last?

The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.
