The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte is seeking a Digital Scholarship Coordinator to provide research support to students and faculty to help them achieve their academic and professional goals. The Digital Scholarship Coordinator will support current digital scholarship and open access efforts while collaborating to implement new digital collections and services in support of teaching, learning, and research.
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a rapidly growing research intensive University offering over 28,500 students a variety of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs in seven academic colleges. UNC Charlotte’s Atkins Library is a comprehensive research library with over 1.9 million printed books, 930,000 e-books, over 400 databases, approximately 75,000 journals and an annual budget of over $10 million.
UNC Charlotte is located in the largest city in North Carolina, a beautiful southern city of 775,202 with over 1.5 million in the greater metropolitan area, in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. Located on a 1,000 acre wooded campus, the University is accessible to the city's performing arts and cultural and sports events and to recreational lakes.
Essential Duties:
- Provide consultations, technical expertise, training, and support for tools (such as Islandora, Omeka, Open Journal System, and Open Monograph System) and practices used by faculty, researchers, students, librarians, and other partners engaged with digital scholarship and publishing.
- Co-direct the diversity resident in support of Digital Publishing and Open Access.
- Collaborate with key campus stakeholders to conceive, develop, and implement digital products and collections that align with the goals and objectives of the Libraries and University.
- Forge new collaborations, connections, and relationships that result in the growth of the University’s interdisciplinary initiatives.
- Collaborate with library leadership, faculty, and staff to ensure planning for and prioritization of digital scholarship programs and projects.
- Foster community and organizational engagement with digital scholarship by hosting, organizing, and presenting events such as speakers, seminars, and workshops in collaboration with others .
- Work with other relevant units within the library to grow digital scholarship capacity and expertise across the organization.
- Work closely with the UNC Press and authors on the development and completion of digital publications of all types.
- Document and promote services, policies, procedures, and training materials.
- Maintain library’s web presence for digital scholarship services.
- Create open access to, disseminate, store, and preserve digital content.
- Lead and develop cross-departmental project teams to create digital content (including born-digital and digitized text, images, and multimedia), employing industry standards for digital production and quality control.
- Coordinate metadata, data curation, storage, and dissemination solutions to make open access and UNC Charlotte unique materials accessible.
- Promote campus engagement around the creation and use of digital collections to be used for teaching and hands-on research projects.
- Participate in assessment of digital scholarship activities and products in collaboration with the Head of Assessment and the Assessment Committee.
- Serve on the Library’s Open Access and Scholarly Communications Committee.
- Represent the Library on appropriate library and campus committees. Participate in library and university faculty governance.
- Fulfill library faculty obligations relating to job performance, service, and research.
- Participate in appropriate regional and/or national professional associations.
Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
- Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association
- Graduation with a master's degree in a specialized area directly relevant to the position description may be an acceptable substitute in certain situations if approved by the Dean.
Preferred Education, Skills and Training Experience:
- Significant experience with digital scholarship services and systems in a research environment;
- Evidence of experience building and maintaining collaborative partnerships and services with and for faculty, staff, students, and administration, including working across boundaries;
- Knowledge of trends in research libraries and higher education, particularly related to digital scholarship, open access, and scholarly communication;
- Experience designing and delivering both face-to-face and online technical training, including workshops and individualized training;
- Experience and competency in planning, project management, and evaluation;
- Experience drafting policies, reports, documentation, and web content;
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills;
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a complex and diverse environment;
- The ability to think creatively, strategically, and proactively.
