How can I use them?
The microfilm/microfiche readers are available on a first-come first-serve basis during regular library hours. You can ask for assistance from the Area 49 Desk on the second floor.
Current Faculty, Staff, and Students
First, log in to the computer with your NinerNet credentials. If the program doesn’t launch automatically, doubleclick the PowerScan 3000 software icon on your desktop.
Next, select the type of media you are using.
Guests
Please see someone at the Area 49 Desk on the second floor, right across from the microform machine in order to be logged onto the computer, and for assistance using the machine. If no one is available, you can get assistance from staff at the Information and Research Desk on the first floor.
If you need to print any material from the microfilm or microfiche, you will need to save it to a USB drive first. When you are ready to print, please contact the Information and Research Desk staff for assistance with guest printing. More information about printing can be found on the Print and Scan Stations page.
Loading
Microfiche:
- Pull the film tray out and put the microfiche between the glass, face up.
- Push the tray back in.
- If the film is mostly black, choose “Negative Fiche Sample.”
- If the film is mostly clear, choose “Positive Fiche Sample.”
Microfilm:
- Select the film type from the screen and pull out the reader tray.
- Load the microfilm according to the tutorial.
- Manually roll the free end to take out the slack, and push the tray in.
- On the screen, use the slow fast forwarding option. Click and hold it to move through the film.
Viewing
- Once the image is on the computer screen, move the tray so the image is within viewing range.
- Click the “Adjust” tab. Auto adjust will work for most items, though you may choose to use others.
- Click “Manual Straighten” to straighten the page.
- Use the green page outline to select the elements of the page you wish to save.
- Click the “Adjust” tab and “Rotate 90” to rotate the image.
- Click the “Adjust” tab and “Mirror” if the image is reversed.
Saving

Under the “Output” tab, click “Print” or “Save.” Pages are able to be saved to a USB drive.
Unloading
Microfiche:

Pull the tray out and take out the microfiche.
Microfilm:
- Pull the tray out.
- Click “High Speed” rewind.
Video Viewing Room

What is it?
The Video Viewing Room is available for library patrons to view DVD/VHS films from the library collection or videos that have been placed on reserve for a course. Reserve materials can be checked out at the Information and Research Desk; other media collections including record albums are shelved on the eighth floor.

How can I use it?
The stations in the Video Viewing Room are on a first-come first-serve basis during regular library hours. The room is subject to the Study Room Policy on the Building and Space Use Policies page. When using the players you’re required to use headphones or earbuds to maintain a quiet environment for those studying and working nearby. Headphones are available for checkout at the Information and Research Desk and Area 49 Desk.
