General Collections Cancellations

We strive to provide research and learning resources needed for student and faculty success. We currently subscribe to thousands of journals, databases, and streaming videos as well as purchase thousands of print and electronic books. Each year the materials we subscribe to increase in price at an annual rate of 5-7%. We also experience cost increases related to our growing enrollment and new areas of study.

Over the years, the Library’s collections budget has struggled to keep up with the increases and with the added budget pressure related to COVID-19, we are forced to cancel materials to stay within the budget we are allotted. When making cancellation decisions the library uses data and subject expert feedback including:

  • Cost Per Use - We gather usage data for most of our electronic resources. Cost per use means the cost of these resources divided by the average uses over a 3-year period. Cost per use ranges from $311/ to $11/per use.

  • Subject Librarian Expertise - The expert subject librarians in Atkins Library work with the Collection Services unit to supplement the usage data and make recommendations based on their knowledge of the needs of the departments they serve.

  • Faculty Feedback - Subject librarians reach out to faculty to gather feedback on cancellations and review alternative solutions to balance the budget and continue to provide important content for teaching and learning.

  • Dean Approval - Before cancellation of high cost/ high impact resources, approval of the Library Dean is required.

When resources are cancelled, the campus will be informed through various avenues including the Atkins Library website, campus listservs, and direct communication between faculty and subject librarians. We will also we try to provide alternative options for access to the materials that are lost, including alternate subscription resources, open access resources, and interlibrary loan.

If you have concerns once cancellations are announced, please complete and submit this form and the Library will try to address your concerns in a timely manner.
